Understanding Different Types Of Bail Bonds

If you find yourself in jail, you may not be able to afford the full cost of the bail. Bail bonding companies, though, offer several different ways to get out of jail and all of them are sure to be a lot less expensive than the full bail cost. Read on and find out about the different types of bail bonds available.

Bail Charged by the Court

This is the most expensive option, but the defendant can be refunded the full cost of the bail at the end of the case if they obey all the conditions and show up for all court dates. In many cases, however, the cost of the bail is far too high for many to afford to pay.

Surety Bail Bonds

When you hear about someone getting out of jail using a bail bond, it's most likely a surety bond though most people just refer to them simply as a bail bond. This is the classic bond in which the defendant or someone acting on their behalf pays the bonding agency a small percentage of the total bail cost. This fee is known as a premium in some locations. The bail bonding agency uses that fee as a guarantee that the defendant will return for their future court appearances. The bail bonding agency arranges the release of the defendant by also guaranteeing that they will return for the hearing. If that doesn't happen, however, the person taking out the bail bond must pay the bonding agency the entire bail amount. That is because the bonding agency must pay that amount to the court system due to the defendant's noncompliance.

Property Bail Bonds

This type of bond is also purchased at a bail bonding company. However, the property does not always need to be deposited except in certain cases. Those cases could include when the bail amount is particularly high, the defendant has very serious charges, or they have skipped bail in the past.

The property pledged can be almost anything of value. Car titles, real estate deeds, jewelry, guns, and more can be used if the bail bonding agency requires it. However, this property is not surrendered to the bail bonding agency for all time. Instead, the property is returned to the owner once the case is completed, and all conditions are fulfilled.
